This is a speech by the famous Italian journalist and writer Tiziano Terzani (1938-2004) which he gave in a high school in Pisa.
As you can guess it is dedicated to teenagers and young adults.
Since it's a speech I couldn't find any "official" translation into English, so I've translated it myself as best as I could trying to keep the natural spontaneity of an oral discourse (and unfortunately changing some parts
). But if you're curious here's the original speech: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtrF_g…
I was deeply touched by his incredible understanding and humility in his approach to the young Italian's condition, which I think can be related to all youngsters today

"And I understand that violence generates violence. If you live in a world that you feel as violent, you react with violence.
I must say though, that in the last thirty years, I haven't read your newspapers, I haven't seen your television, I don't have a cell phone, I have a different way of communicating so of course I'm different.
I know, your life is not easy; you have this sense of being isolated, that the world isn't yours. Then it's understandable if kids these days read sport magazines**, because the things I talk about seem a problem that doesn't concern them. They're frustrated because the world belongs to other people: to the ones with a tie, to ones who have the power, to ones that have the money. And they must console themselves with the little things: their girlfriend, a trip to the sea side, a pizza. The world belongs to others.
And my message kids is this: the world is yours! You can change it, don't let yourselves be trapped in roles that you don't like, because of course you can be a lawyer, a doctor, a journalist, a psychologist, a bricklayer, a smith
But you can also do one of these jobs loving what you do. And in every profession you can invent for yourself a margin of personality, with passion and with love.
I guarantee it, I've done it myself so it's possible for everyone. My message kids is this: the world is yours!"
** the word used by Tiziano is actually "Corriere dello Sport" which is an important daily sport newspaper in Italy, similar to "ESPN", "the Sporting News" or "the Sports Illustrated"
